Welcome to the Centaurus Galaxy Server

Galaxy for the University of Manchester at the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health (FBMH)

Centaurus is a customised version of Galaxy primarily for use by researchers within the University of Manchester. The service is managed jointly by the Bioinformatics Core Facility (BCF) within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health (FBMH), and by IT Services.

[13/03/2024] Centaurus updated to Galaxy version 22.05

The Centaurus Galaxy service has been upgraded to Galaxy version 22.05.

Using Centaurus

Please complete the following online form to request a new account on Centaurus:

Accounts are only available to users with a University of Manchester email address

Disk quotas

The default quota for each user is 100 Gb. Please contact the administrators if this is not sufficient for your needs.

Note that you are solely responsible for managing and backing up any data that you upload or create on this service.

Uploading data

In principle files of any size can now be uploaded to this service directly from your computer via a web browser by using the Get Data -> Upload File tool.

There are also the following alternative upload options:

Warning: it is not possible to directly upload data that is hosted on the BCF's 'bartzabel' web server. This is a limitation imposed by the network configuration used by Research IT. Please contact us if you wish to upload data provided by the BCF via 'bartzabel'.

Mailing list

The FLS-GALAXY-USERS@listserv.manchester.ac.uk mailing list is used for announcements about downtime, upgrades etc to this service.

Unless you opted out you will have been subscribed to this list when your account was created; visit the University's ListServ page at https://listserv.manchester.ac.uk/index.shtml to manage or unsubscribe.

Support and contact

Support for this service is provided on a 'reasonable effort' basis.

Acceptable Use

Please note that passwords for this system are separate from those used to access other university services but should be treated with the same level of care. Passwords can be changed via User -> Preferences -> Manage your information.

Centaurus uses computation and storage hardware provided and maintained by the IT Services Research Infrastructure Team, and usage of the service is subject to the University's policy on Acceptable Use of IT Facilities and Services.

Each user is responsible for ensuring that their usage of the service is acceptable, and is accountable for all actions undertaken using their credentials (i.e. username and password).

Acknowledgement of Centaurus Galaxy use

Please reference both the BCF and IT Services in any research journal or publication that requires citation of any author's work. The recognition of BCF and IT Services support is important to ensure the sustainability of the service. The minimal content of a citation should include:

"The authors would like to acknowledge the use of the local Galaxy service provided by the Bioinformatics Core Facility and IT Services at the University of Manchester."
